Cheap Cover Sewing Machine- Review
Cheap Sewing Machines - Save Big on Sewing Machines & More.
I used to sew when I was younger, now the kids are all grown and I have more time for myself.I picked this machine for the price, simplicity, and the Brother name.
So far I am very happy with this little guy. For the price it is well worth it. It took me a few tries before I was able to thread the bobbin and load it. I've gotten better at it. For me, the speed is easy to control, it takes corners really well, and I love the reverse sewing. You don't have to do anything except flip the switch.Having only ever used a straight stitch machine, I love the choice of stitches. The tension is easy to fix (I never had any luck with that before now) I have yet to use the button hole maker, and I have not sewn in a zipper, but in time I'll feel braver! My only complaint is threading the needle, my eyes aren't what they used to be. But the machine came with three needle threaders, and that helps somewhat.
All in all this is a great little machine.I recommend it to any one who is just starting out, or just wants to replace an older machine.
I just got this machine a week ago as an early Christmas gift from my hubby. I didn't purchase it from Amazon, because we found a Thanksgiving-week deal at Jo-Ann fabrics, so I picked it up there for about 0.
I am very happy with this machine. It has 66 stitch functions (search google for an image "list" of these, like I did), 3 buttonhole options, and a twin-needle option. I have used about 10 of the decorative stitches already, and I'm incredibly impressed with how well the machine handles them.
This machine is quiet enough that I can have a conversation with my husband while he's 15 feet away, all without either of us raising our voices. It has a smooth feed and doesn't shake (like my last machine did, even in tip-top shape!). It is sleek-looking and it doesn't weigh much, so I can carry it without feeling as though my arm is going to break off.
The reverse stitch is easy to use (the button is right by the needle, so you can hold it as you are feeding the fabric). Bobbins are simple to wind on this machine, and it even has a self-threading needle, but I prefer to thread by hand. I've had no problems here, it works beautifully, but I kind of think it's over-kill as I have no problems with threading my needle. However, I can see how this option may be very helpful to people with unsteady hands.
It's computerized, so it adjusts the thread tension automatically, which is one of the big reasons I was interested in a newer Singer model. With past sewing machines, I've had trouble with thread tension despite constant fidgeting and following the manual's explicit instructions.
Oh, and the bobbin! It's got a drop-in system, which makes it so much easier to thread. No more taking pieces out of my machine to put the bobbin back in! I LOVE THIS MACHINE!
But seriously, I love this machine. I have only had it for a week or so, but I have done a LOT of sewing (Christmas gifts!) and I am in looooooove with this machine. I am absolutely 100% satisfied, and you probably will be too.
The machine is just wonderful - for the price you want to pay it's the best deal of both sewing and embroidery you can get. Although the machine arrived in an open box, it works great and I have never had any problems with it. For somebody who has used a sewing machine before, this one is extremely easy to learn. In addition, this Brother's creation will be a dream for those who used to work on simple mechanical machines. Some its functions make your sewing life so much easier! And the embroidery unit is so pleasant and easy to work with. Moreover, you can download quite a few designs from Brother website for free!Although you still will need stabilizers, software, threads, more bobbins, and of course feet and designs, it is really a sweet deal for the money it costs.
I bought this case at a Target store. It was marked down because it was very dirty, but it wiped clean with water and with no difficulty. The only thing I would suggest is to measure your machine before buying. It said "Singer" on the cardboard wrapping. I have a Singer, but it wouldn't fit until I removed my upper thread holders. I love it because it is easy to pick up and it holds my presser foot and accessories.
I am an intermediate sewer and bought this machine on the advice of my aunt, who is a professional seamstress who uses the same machine.
The machine is easy to thread. The bobbin, also easy to load, is in a clear encasing so you know when you're running low on bobbin thread. The special stitches look great, are easy to use, and provide excellent support to my crafting projects. (They do use a lot of thread, though.) The feed system is so smooth, much better than my old Singer. Feels like I've upgraded my ride from an old beater truck to a luxury sedan!
The manual is a little tough to use if you don't have much sewing knowledge, but that's my only complaint. Wish I'd bought this machine years ago!
The 60 mini-cone size of all-purpose polyester sewing thread gives my sewing nook a ready-to-sew-ability to make quick projects without running to the fabric store for matching thread. I also bought the wooden 60 spool holder from Amazon, and it makes my variety of thread easy to see and use in a very little space. Per minnie-cone of thread - this is economic and with the cone holder great for small spaces.
I am learning to sew again. This machine is very basic, but not more than I need right now. The instructions that came with the machine are easy to understand. It is very easy to set up and to use.
I agree with the rave reviews for the se-350 now se-400.... for sewing, it's a dream of an upgrade from my battered but still working brother xr-40 bought from costco @ 10-ish years ago.
for embroidery it's limited as the max hoop size is not very large, and an extra purchase, but fun to play with. I give it 4 stars... it's a great intermediate sewing and beginner embroidery machine.
i purchased this machine (shipped promptly from J&R via Amazon) last month after a lot of research. what i found was.... the brother se-350 was pretty much identical to the brother project runway 7700 machine. the 7700 was recently updated to the 7800, adding 1 usb port, as was the se 350 upgraded w/ usb port. the project runway machines come w/ a roller case, the se models ship w/ vinyl case. se-400 is 100 bucks cheaper than the PR 7800. the se 350 is still shipping for smae price as se-400. i advise purchasing the se 400 even if you don't plan on using it w/ your computer currently as brother will be offering system upgrades you will need usb port for.
most software for embroidery sewing/embroidery machines is not Mac compatible so i assumed the usb port would be useless for a while.. Wrong!
connect the se 400 via included usb cable to your mac, it'll show up as an external hard drive, mine was named unknown, i do not advise changing this. then add pes files from your computer by dropping them on the sewing machine/external drive. do not add folders of designs on machine, they must be added one at a time to be recognized.
and have fun!
I have never used a sewing machine before, but i liked the idea that I can do alterations on my jeans and pants, do some patchwork on my old clothes, and do various jobs here and there.
So I bought this. I was debating between this package and the machine only unit, and decided to go for the package because it has the same sewing machine, plus sewing kit that is supposed to have everything that fits to this small machine, and a pair of electrical scissors!
I did calculations and the package would work much better if the scissors are worth buying. I gave it a try.
1. Sewing machine.
As a person who has never used a sewing machine, the machine looked little bit complicated (mind you that I am a software Engineer, and not afraid of using a machine for the first time) with lots of holes for threads. But the guide coming with the machine explains pretty much everything to get started with. I could get around with the guide. The problem was, though, the guide is in crude black and white print and it is hard to recognize the tiny holes in the pictures. And there's one picture while there are more than three ways to get the thread hooked up.
If each way has an accompanying picture in colors, it would have been very helpful.
It also comes with a small packet that contains a few thread rolls and needles.
2. Sewing kit
I haven't opened it yet, but the kit seems to contain the essential elements.
3. Electrical Scissors
So, here's my problem. I expected a lot about these scissors, because I thought the electrical scissors are a bit luxurious item. But they didn't work when I put two AA batteries into the slot. I tried a few different brands of batteries but they didn't work. It made the motor sound in the very beginning at first but that was it. There is no guideline so I don't even know how it is supposed to work. I am thinking about getting them replaced by calling the sewing machine company.
I will update this review once I figure these scissors out.
But I love this little sewing machine; and thinking I would have fun and save money as well!
I'm a 28 year-old male and this machine rocks!
It is effortless to thread and set up the bobbin, both of which have always been the major barrier to me mending my own clothes on other machines. It sews through everything I've ever put under the needle. The pedal is precise; I can sew one stitch at a time or scream through a pant leg in 5 seconds. All of the other controls are easy to understand and use and the machine even has a built-in "beep beep" that warns me when I try to do something stupid like sew with the needle in the wrong position. I also like the bright LED work light that won't burn out until long after I have. Other special tricks I've performed with this machine: you can add a double needle to do some cool hems or designs, and you can even order an attachment foot that transforms this machine into a serger (well, kinda.)
The only issue I've had in the year I've owned it is the "automatic threader" which is a strange device that pulls the thread through the eye of the needle. It worked fine with the factory installed needle, but hasn't worked with any replacement needles I've used. I could care less though; how hard is it to push thread through a hole?
I get that more experienced sewers might have other issues with this machine, but for someone who wants to hem some pants, repair clothes, sew the occasional costume, and experiment with basic clothing construction, you can't go wrong with this model.
